The name every Tom, Dick and Harry knows on the internet turned 10 this month. Google, which has revolutionised Tim Berners Lee’s invention like nothing else, was founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page 10 Septembers ago in 1998.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, Google has launched Project 10 raised to 100th. The San Francisco giant is offering $10m in prize money to five ideas that have the potential to change the world. The eight categories in which Google has solicited offers are :-

Sustainable energy use

Environment

Health

Education

Shelter

Encouraging communities

Building opportunities to help people better provide for themselves and their families.

“Everything else”

Submissions close on October 20, following which Google employees will pick their 100 favourite ideas. The public will bring the 100 down to 20, and an advisory board will announce the final five winners somewhere in February 2009.
