The image can be seen on the official Google.com Page.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, Google has launched Project 10 raised to 100th. The San Francisco giant is offering $10m in prize money to five ideas that have the potential to change the world. The eight categories in which Google has solicited offers are :-

Sustainable energy use

Environment

Health

Education

Shelter

Encouraging communities

Building opportunities to help people better provide for themselves and their families.

“Everything else”

Submissions close on October 20, following which Google employees will pick their 100 favourite ideas. The public will bring the 100 down to 20, and an advisory board will announce the final five winners somewhere in February 2009.

And PR has indeed updated, ladies and gentlemen. Some people have lost their PR, while others have seen an increase. On the face of it, it seems that many inner pages have been awarded Page Rank on this update.

Check whether your PR has updated by going to digpagerank.com ( My personal favourite for checking PR). There are loads of others, but that tool is my favourite.

Facebook, the internet social networking site founded by Mark Zuckerberg, has appointed 38 year old Sheryl Sandberg as its Chief Operations Officer. Sandberg, a Harvard graduate, was previously Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google.

Facebook, founded in February 2004, has grown by leaps and bounds and the appointment of Ms. Sandberg replaces the void left by Owen Van Natta, who was made Chief Revenue Officer.

Ms. Sandberg will report directly to Mark Zuckerberg, thereby making her a virtual No.2 in the management.

She was the youngest in Fortune magazine’s 2007 list of ”500 most powerful women ”.

Sandberg’s departure rocked Google shares, which fell by as much as 4.6 %. Sandberg had joined the search engine giant in 2001, and was chiefly responsible for the success of its online advertising business, Adwords.

In other news, Forbes’ annual list says that Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest self made billionaire in history. Zuckerberg has been valued at $ 1.5 billion by the magazine, which has conservatively estimated Facebook to be worth $5 billion. Zuckerberg has a 30 % stake in Facebook, and is 785th on the Forbes list. Sergey Brin and Larry Page, co founders of Google, are 32nd and 33rd on the same list.

I’ve seen this question asked by plenty of newbie webmasters. I do not claim to be an expert on the subject, but this is an answer that every webmaster worth his salt should be able to answer.

Is Google case sensitive ?

The answer, very simply, is a big NO.

You could search for a word with all capitals, all small letters, a mixture of small and capital letters and they would all return the same result.

Let us take a look at a few examples

Let us take the keyword Google itself-

Google- 1,690,000,000 results

GOOGLE- 1,690,000,000 results

gOOgLE- 1,690,000,000 results

If you want to hear it from the horse’s mouth, here you go.

Google searches are NOT case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for george washington, George Washington, and gEoRgE wAsHiNgToN will all return the same results.

Taken from Google Help.
If you do see differences, it may be due to the fact that the data is pulled from different data centres. However, the sites on the first page will definitely be the same.

The man behind the little toolbar that causes millions of webmasters to chew their nails when an update is round the corner is now off the market. Yes folks, Larry Page, the man for whom Page Rank was so named, has tied the knot with Lucy Southworth on the Necker Island, owned by Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson. Page co founded Google with Sergey Brin, who himself got married in May this year to Anne Wojcicki.

Only about 600 people were invited to the wedding. Details about it are extremely hard to obtain, as the whole thing has been shrouded in secrecy. Every search engine blog worth its name has been reporting on the event, including SearchEngineLand

Richard Branson was reportedly the groom’s best man

Mrs. Page is seven years younger than Larry, 34, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2001.

While lucysouthworth.com is taken, lucindasouthworth.com is still available.

mrspage.com and mrsgoogle.com are also taken

Social bookmarking has become extremely popular in the last couple of years, and there are newer sites coming in everyday. The idea of having the users select the stories that they wanted to read was considered a novel one when the first site appeared on the scene, and there has been no looking back since then. Some of the bigger social bookmarking sites can send hundreds and thousands of visitors to your site at one go- such is the extent to which these sites have become popular.

If your story hits the Digg frontpage, for example, there is a reasonably good chance of your server crashing and your blog going off line. This has therefore resulted in many people trying to sneak their way into the first page by hook or crook- exchanging Diggs is quite a common practice on several webmaster forums. Now, I won’t comment on whether or not that practice is ethical. Some people might believe that you do not need artificial ways to get to the top, for if you genuinely have good content, you will automatically get recognition. Others believe that you need to lend your site a helping hand so that it can stand on its own two legs. The former is true in most cases, but a few diggs from family and friends will not hurt your site one bit.

Google have spread their net far and wide, and I have to say that their services are pretty good. The services that you get with a Google account are pretty top class, and signing up for a new G-Mail account is probably easier than signing up for another service provider. I love Google documents, but issues like privacy are a cause for worry.

Here is the URL- Most Popular Shared Stuff

Other notable social bookmarking sites ( Digg has already been mentioned in the first paragraph). You would have seen these and others on many wordpress blogs that use the social bookmarking plugin ( sociable is one such plugin)

1.) Del.icio.us

2.) Reddit

3.) Stumbleupon

Other similar sites include Newsvine, Slashdot, Fark etc.

What do you need to have a successful website ?

a.) An effective internet marketing strategy- Yes

b.) Do link Exchange, as well as one way links ( preferably naturally). When all the big sites link to each other, it isn’t manipulative link exchange, do remember that.

c.) Use the services of advertising agencies ? Depends on how big you want your site to be.

d.) Use internet marketers ? Again, a question of your budget.

e.) Use pay per click advertising. Yes, can drive some decent traffic if you invest wisely.
